Reminder: Add Day is Approaching

Just a friendly reminder that the last day for adding courses and removing incompletes is this Friday, October 17th.  Please remember to bring your add cards to the Registrar's Office by 5:00pm on Friday.

New Course to Satisfy Additional Laboratory Requirement

Ph 8bc, Experiments in Electromagnetism (3 units; second and third terms) will now satisfy the Institute-wide “Additional Introductory Laboratory” requirement. Both terms must be completed to satisfy this requirement. With the creation of this new course, the currently built-in lab component of Ph 1bc (Practical Track) is split off to become this stand-alone course. Ph 1bc (Prac Track) and Ph 8bc are designed to be taken currently however students not taking Ph 1bc (Prac Track) may take Ph 8bc separately. There will be an organizational meeting for this class in the winter term. Watch for it in the Class Schedule.

Coming Winter Term: ch 3x - Fundamental Techniques of Experimental Chemistry

First time freshmen may choose to enter a lottery for enrollment in Ch 3x for winter term.  The course will beta test a new suite of experiments for Ch 3a and will satisfy the freshman chemistry laboratory course requirement.  15 freshmen will be randomly selected on the first day of registration.  To enter the lottery, sign up here or stop by the Registrar's Office before November 19th.

Online Grading

Beginning Monday, October 20th, Online Grading is coming to REGIS.  Similar to the current online freshmen progress reports, Instructors and TAs will be able to log onto REGIS and submit midterm and final grades in addition to Freshmen Progress Reports.  A new Grade Reporting link will be available within REGIS.

Students will be able to access their midterm grades and final grades through REGIS as well with a new Grade Report feature.

Blue slips, which notified students and advisers of midterm deficiencies, will no longer be mailed.  Now students earning deficient midterm grades (C- or below) will receive an email that is cc'd to their adviser notifying them of the grade.

Annual Notification of FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords students certain rights with respect to their education records. These rights include:

  • The right to inspect and review their education records within 10 days of the day the Institute receives a request for access.

  • The right to request an amendment to their education records that they believe are inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of the student's privacy rights under FERPA.

Keep Connected with your Cell Phone

Especially for new students... Be sure to add/update your mobile phone number under My Personal Information in access.caltech.  In the event of fire, earthquake, or other emergency, Caltech's notification system will send a voice message and SMS (Short Message Service) text message to your mobile phone.  SMS is often more reliable when call volume is high.  Check with your mobile provider to verify if your plan and phone have text message capability.
