Summer Work Study

Information about and the application for 2010 Summer Work-Study is available online at http://www.finaid.caltech.edu/uploads/File/1011SWSRequest.pdf. If you are interested in Summer Work-Study, please (1) submit the Summer Work-Study application directly to the Caltech Financial Aid Office and (2) submit your complete 2010-2011 financial aid application (with all supporting documents) to IDOC by May 1, 2010.

The Summer Work-Study employment period is from July 1 through September 26, 2010.  Eligibility for Summer Work-Study is contingent upon the availability of funds and your demonstrated financial need.  The Summer Work-Study award is designed to allow you to earn your upcoming summer earnings expectation.  You are expected to save a minimum of $1,500 from the $6,500 award.

PLEASE NOTE that you CANNOT have a Summer Work-Study job and do a SURF at the same time.  If you will be doing a SURF, you may apply for Summer Work-Study, however, you must complete your SURF before starting your Summer Work-Study job.  Since the SURF program is ten weeks long, you can only receive a four-week Summer Work-Study award of $2,600 (the $6,500 ten-week award prorated for four weeks). Post-SURF Summer Work-Study awards are Caltech Work-Study (the hiring department is responsible for 40% of your salary) rather than Federal Work-Study (the hiring department is responsible for 25% of your salary).

Graduate Students: Turn in your Pay Date "Leap" Loan Papers by April 30!

Graduate students: Don’t get caught short on July 1!  Although the change in pay date won’t happen until July, we need to process your loan papers this month to comply with Federal regulations.  If you will be at  Caltech this summer and are eligible for the loan, you were mailed a packet of information with material to apply for the loan.  You must return the signed papers to the Bursar’s office by April 30 in order to be eligible for the loan.  If you are not taking the loan, please fill out the notification of non-participation and return.  Please see the graduate office website http://www.gradoffice.caltech.edu/loan_default.html  for detailed instructions or contact the graduate office with your questions.    -  Joe Shepherd, Dean of Graduate Studies

IMPORTANT!  Advising Requirement For All Undergraduates

Beginning now, Caltech undergraduate students will be required to meet one-on-one with their advisers at least once a year.  Hopefully many of you are already doing that. Advisers have been given several online tools to record meetings with their advisees, and students will be able to see whether they have satisfied the requirement through a new Advising Status presented on REGIS.

If students have already met with their advisors, advisors can scroll down to the end of the opening page on REGIS and click the Advising Requirement Met button. There is also functionality to record Advising notes or to set an advising hold for individual students.

We have created a new “Advising Arena” website at http://www.registrar.caltech.edu/advising.htm where you can review details of the advising policies and online functionality. This link is available within the REGIS application as well. Please check it out! If you have feedback about the content, please let the Registrar’s Office know and additional materials can be added or updated.

To date about 76% of the undergraduates have an indication posted that they have met one-on-one with their advisors!
